Frequently Asked Questions
If you are considering a journey with us, these are the questions we are asked most often.
Each of our Signature Journeys also has its own FAQ covering fitness, weather, logistics and what’s included on that specific trip.

The Experience
What makes your trips different from other tours?
We focus on how the experience comes together—not just where you go.
That means small groups, thoughtful pacing, strong local food, local judgment, and a level of planning that allows the trip to feel seamless from start to finish.
You are not just being shown the region. You are experiencing it in a way that is better paced, more complete, and far less fragmented than standard-format touring or trying to piece it together yourself.
What is a typical day like?
Most days begin outdoors—on the coast, on the trail, or on the water—when conditions are at their best.
Midday usually allows time to reset, explore, or settle into a well-chosen meal. Evenings bring the pace down and give the day a proper finish through food, atmosphere, and a more relaxed rhythm.
The overall goal is that the day feels full and rewarding, without ever feeling rushed or overloaded.
Are your trips only focused on adventure, or is there a cultural component too?
Both.
The days are built around landscapes and activity, but the experience also includes the towns, history, food, and local character that define the region.
That balance is part of what makes the journeys work. You are not just outside all day, and you are not just moving from meal to meal. The two sides of the experience support each other.
Activity & Trip Fit
How active are your journeys?
Our trips are active, but not extreme.
You can expect meaningful time outdoors, coastal hiking, time on the water, and full days. At the same time, we design the journeys to be manageable and enjoyable over multiple days.
Do I need prior experience for activities like hiking or kayaking?
No specialized experience is required for most of what we do.
You should be comfortable with moderate physical activity and enjoy being outdoors, but you do not need an advanced background in hiking, kayaking, or adventure travel.
If you have specific questions about activity level or fit, we are happy to help guide you toward the right journey.
What size are your groups?
Our Signature Journeys are capped at 12 guests, with both of us guiding on every departure – a maximum of one guide per six guests. That allows for better pacing, more flexibility, smoother transitions, and a more personal experience overall. It is a deliberate part of the way we travel, not an incidental detail.
Can couples or solo travellers join?
Anyone is welcome to join one of our scheduled journeys as long as it is not yet fully booked.
What's Included
What is included?
Our journeys are fully inclusive by design.
That means everything required to deliver the trip is handled for you:
Accommodations
All transportation during the journey
Guided support throughout
all activities and tours included in the itinerary
All meals as well as drinks and snacks during the day
From the moment your journey begins, you do not need to coordinate logistics, make reservations, or think about what comes next. You can simply focus on the experience.
The only exceptions are alcoholic beverages and gratuities.
Do you handle transportation during the trip?
Yes.
Once your journey begins, transportation is handled throughout the trip. You do not need to worry about routing, navigation, driving, parking, or how one part of the day connects to the next.
What is not included?
The only items not included are alcoholic beverage, gratuities, travel insurance and your travel to and from the journey’s start and end points.
Everything else is handled for you.
Booking & Payments
When is the best time to travel?
Our operating season is generally mid-May to mid-October.
Each part of the season offers something different. Early season can bring a quieter feel, summer offers energy and longer days, and early fall often brings excellent conditions and a slightly more relaxed atmosphere.
If timing is flexible, we are happy to help you determine what season best suits the experience you want.
How far in advance should we book?
Earlier is always better, especially if you are travelling during peak season or looking for a Custom Journey with specific dates and regional preferences.
That said, it is always worth reaching out. Availability can vary, and sometimes strong options still exist closer to departure than you might expect.
Do we need to have everything planned before contacting you?
Not at all.
A rough sense of timing, group size, and travel style is enough to begin. Many strong trips start with just a few basic ideas and become clearer as the planning conversation develops.
Is there any commitment when we inquire?
No.
The initial conversation is simply about fit, timing, and direction. It gives both sides a chance to determine whether the trip we design is the right match for what you are looking for.
What currency are your prices in?
All prices are quoted in US dollars, inclusive of all applicable fees and taxes. Nothing hidden, no surprises. The price you see is the price you pay. There is no tax added at checkout and no additional booking or processing fees.
Will my departure actually run?
Yes. Every one of our 2027 Nova Scotia journeys carries our Guaranteed Departure promise. Once you’re booked, the trip runs. You won’t be told six weeks out that numbers didn’t materialize and your trip has been cancelled.
Our Newfoundland journey is the one exception. The logistics involved in this tour mean that we require a minimum of 4 guests. Still pretty close to a guaranted departure. The full details are on that journey’s page, including our commitment never to take your final payment on an unconfirmed departure.
How does payment work?
A $250 USD deposit confirms your reservation. The balance is divided into three equal payments due at 135, 90 and 45 days prior to your departure date. There is no premium for paying over time, it’s simply how we structure our payment plan to give you some flexibilty in planning your finances.
If you book within 135 days of departure the payment schedule will adjust accordingly.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancel more than 45 days before departure and every payment you’ve made is refunded in full, less the $250 booking deposit, which is non-refundable.
At 45 days, final payment is due and bookings are non-refundable. This is why we require travel insurance, to ensure that you’re protected in the event that you need to cancel for extenuating circumstances.
What if you cancel a journey?
If we’re forced to cancel a departure for circumstances outside our control, you choose: a full refund (including the booking deposit) or transfer your booking to any other 2027 departure, subject to availability, with any difference in price adjusted either way.
Is travel insurance required?
Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance including trip cancellation and medical coverage is required for all guests.
We don’t work with a preferred provider, choose a policy that suits your circumstances.
Custom Journeys
How does a Custom Journey work?
We begin with a conversation about your timing, your group, and the kind of experience you are looking for.
From there, we shape the overall direction of the trip, refine the details that matter, and handle the planning and logistics required to deliver it properly.
Can you combine multiple regions in one trip?
Yes.
In many cases, combining regions can create a stronger overall journey by adding contrast, momentum, and a fuller sense of Atlantic Canada as a whole.
Can we adjust the activity level or focus of a trip?
Yes.
That is one of the main reasons travellers choose a Custom Journey. The overall pace, activity level, food emphasis, and regional focus can all be shaped to better fit the group.
Choosing The Right Trip
How do we know which journey is right for us?
If you are unsure, we are happy to help.
We can recommend the best fit based on your group, travel timing, activity preferences, and whether you are looking for a more structured or more tailored experience.
Where do your trips start and end?
Our journeys generally start and end in Halifax, NS. However, customized journeys can accommodate a variety of starting and ending points depending on the needs of your group.
What is the next step if we are interested?
Start with an inquiry.
Tell us a bit about your timing, group, and what kind of trip you are considering. From there, we will help you determine whether a Signature Journey or Custom Journey is the better fit and guide you through the next step.
